Septic Odors Outside: Troubleshooting Guide

Septic Vent Stacks

A properly functioning septic system will treat all wastewater generated from a home. If all components are functioning as designed then homeowners should not experience any unpleasant odors outside their home. If, however, septic odors are experienced here are some of the possible issues a system may be exhibiting, and how to correct them.

Odors generated from the septic system should travel through a home's plumbing system and be released through the vent stacks on the roof. Depending on wind and temperature conditions those odors can be pulled down to ground level. To eliminate this issue, charcoal filters can be installed on all existing vent stacks by a septic professional. These filters are extremely effective but will have to be changed out periodically, usually every 3-5 years.

Another potential culprit of a septic odor outside could be coming from the septic tank. If the septic tank lids are at the ground surface then the lid seals should be checked. Over time the seals will dry out and deteriorate, requiring them to be replaced.

A more serious cause of septic odors outside could be due to a failing septic tank. It is imperitive that septic tanks are watertight so that they can properly hold and transport wastewater. If a tank developes a leak then wastewater is able to seap out and emit an odor. The only solution would be to replace the septic tank and have the failed tank decomissioned.

Another serious cause of septic odors outside could be a failing leach field. When leach fields can no longer process the wastewater that is delivered to them then the water can make its way to the groud surface. Once to the surface, the wastewater will begin to pool and cause the septic odor. This poses a serious health hazard and needs to be addressed immediately by a septic professional.
