Septic System Installation Process

Septic System Installation Process

If a new septic system is to be installed or a failing system is in need of replacement, several steps must be completed in order to start the installation process. If you are new to septic systems and have never gone through the process of installation or replacement, here is a brief step by step of the process to help a homeowner be successful.

Septic Soil Profile Hole

First, in order to design a septic system the soil where the leach field is going to be located needs to be tested and analyzed. This includes an excavator being brought on-site and digging at least two profile holes. These profile holes will be a maximum of eight feet deep. Once the holes are excavated an engineering firm will be able to analyze the soil layers and determine the size and type of leach field to be installed. The engineer firm will genereate a soil analysis report and from that report the septic system is now able to be designed.

After the soil report has been complete and a septic system has been designed an estimate can be generated for installation. An installer has to know the size, material, and obstacles associated with constructing your septic system. Septic systems vary greatly and no two are alike. So, without a design in hand an installer is unable to provide an estimate for install.

With an engineer’s soil report and design in hand, the septic install or repair permit is able to be applied for from your county health department. Once approved and the permit is issued the licensed installer can now begin installation. Installation times will vary depending on weather, type of system being installed and any physical obstacles the property may have. Generally, a septic system can be fully installed and ready for inspection in one to two weeks. After the system is fully installed, the health department and possibly an engineer will complete the necessary inspections. Upon completion and approval of the inspections the installer is now able to backfill the system bringing the project to completion.

Described above are the general steps to install or repair a septic system. Depending on the type of system to be installed a few more steps may not have been mentioned. For a smoother experience it is recommended to have a licensed installer guide homeowners through the process.
